We can all agree that heat can be harmful in different ways–sunburns, heat illnesses, and dehydration are great examples. With August here and September coming, the sun is prominent in the Midwest! In this blog, we will break down what is good and not so good about the heat, how to keep cool, and how to prevent risks!

Pros & Cons of Heat

There are many pros and cons when it comes to hot weather. Some serious, and others being total opinions and advantages! Let’s go through them all:

Pros & Cons of Heat

Keeping Cool in the Heat & Why

Obviously there are many health benefits from the heat and sun, but it is still important to keep cool during those hot weeks. Too much heat can cause irritability and exhaustion, which is never fun. Additionally, dehydration, heat illnesses, and sunburns aren’t too fun either. Here’s a few tips to keep cool in the heat according to Nidirect:

Keep Out of the Heat!

  • Avoid going out during the hours of 11:00 am and 3:00 pm since this time has the highest UV

  • Wear hats and loose-fitting clothes when outside

  • Don't leave children in the heat

Staying Cool

  • Stay inside when there is a large heat wave

  • Close curtains in rooms that get an excessive amount of sun

  • Drink plenty of water and/or fruit juice

  • Avoid alcohol and caffeine, as these can cause dehydration

  • Eat cold foods like salads and fruit

Heat is healthy in small doses. A lake day every once in a while or a day out gardening is great for your health. However, lake days every single day may cause skin irritation, dehydration, and more! Your body needs to rejuvenate in the mid to cool temperatures. Staying cool and keeping out of the heat can prevent all kinds of illness. It is all about finding a healthy balance!
